Fear not I bring you Good Tidings of Great Joy!

Christmas isn't about the gifts, decorations, movies, or even the baby Jesus. It is about what Jesus Christ did for each of us, he atoned for our sins, sorrows, illnesses and the mistreatment that has been heaped upon us. He made it possible for us to be with our families eternally. So this Christmas don't worry about having everything perfect, just do what is important-spend time with your family and be thankful for the opportunity to have them with you forever in our Heavenly Father's kingdom.

Merry Christmas to you all!

Traditions

I am always interested in family traditions. Our family has some that came from my side of the family, some from his and some we made up together. Some we may have "borrowed" from friends because they were so fun. And sadly some our family may have outgrown, given up, or forgotten about through the years.

What are some of the traditions you have with your family during the Holiday Season (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years)?
If you'd like to share some of them, email me, halfadozen2000@embarqmail.com, and next week I'll post some of them on the blog for others to see and possibly "borrow".

I'll start it off: This is one of my kids' favorites, but we only started it a few years ago. On Christmas Eve we have Panda Express. It began because by Christmas Eve I was too tired from baking, wrapping and shopping to make dinner. Who knew it would become something they would look forward to?

Now it's your turn.

Vegas Valley Ward Angel Tree

The Vegas Valley Ward Angel Tree will be in the north foyer every Sunday until December 16th. If you'd like to anonymously help a family in need this Christmas, check it out.  Helping is as easy as removing an ornament from the tree, purchasing a Wal-Mart gift card in the denomination listed on the ornament, placing the gift card and the ornament you removed from the tree in a tithing envelope, and lastly giving the envelope to a member of the Bishopric. The gift cards will be used to purchase specifics for a few families in the ward.

There are a few ornaments on the tree designated for cash (if that is easier for your family), but the preferred method of donation is a Wal-Mart gift card. The deadline to turn in the gift cards is December 16th.

Thank you for your generosity.

August Visiting Teaching Message

Taking Action in Time of Need

Prayerfully study this material and, as appropriate, discuss it with the sisters you visit. Use the questions to help you strengthen your sisters and to make Relief Society an active part of your own life.

Taking Action in Time of Need

As visiting teachers, one of our purposes is to help strengthen families and homes. The sisters we visit should be able to say, “If I have problems, I know my visiting teachers will help without waiting to be asked.” In order to serve, we have a responsibility to be conscious of the needs of the sisters we visit. When we seek inspiration, we will know how to respond to the spiritual and temporal needs of each sister we are assigned to visit. Then, using our time, skills, talents, prayers of faith, and spiritual and emotional support, we can help give compassionate service during times of illness, death, and other special circumstances.1

Through the help of reports from visiting teachers, the Relief Society presidency identifies those who have special needs because of physical or emotional illness, emergencies, births, deaths, disability, loneliness, or other challenges. The Relief Society president then reports her findings to the bishop. Under his direction, she coordinates assistance.2

As visiting teachers we can have “great reason … to rejoice” because of “the blessing which hath been bestowed upon us, that we have been made instruments in the hands of God to bring about this great work” (Alma 26:1, 3).

From Our History

In the early years of the Church, membership was small and centralized. Members could respond quickly when someone was in need. Today our membership is over 14 million and is spread throughout the world. Visiting teaching is part of the Lord’s plan to provide help for all His children.

“The only system which could provide succor and comfort across a church so large in a world so varied would be through individual servants near the people in need,” said President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency.

“… Every bishop and every branch president has a Relief Society president to depend upon,” he continued. “She has visiting teachers, who know the trials and the needs of every sister. She can, through them, know the hearts of individuals and families. She can meet needs and help the bishop in his call to nurture individuals and families.”3
For more information, go to reliefsociety.lds.org.

What Can I Do?

  1. Am I using my gifts and talents to bless others?
  2. Do the sisters I watch over know that I am willing to help them when they have a need?

Missionary service...

We have an exciting opportunity coming up to donate gently used items to our local missionaries.  We can help support them in their endeavors to be here serving the Lord in Las Vegas.  On Thursday, August 2nd our Stake is responsible for the Missionary Zone Conference Luncheon and Sewing Center to be held at the Gateway and Wyoming building.  We need your help with clothing donations.

The items the Mission Office has requested for donation are as follows:

Ties
Suits
Shirts
Skirts
Blouses

The donations need to be brought to the Stake Center on August 2nd between 10 a.m. and 12 noon.  We have made arrangements for a drop-off the night before (at a Ward member's home) if you are unable to be at the Stake Center on August 2nd.  We would love to see the East Stake really pull through for our beloved missionaries.

Points of Light

The Relief Society Sisters of the East Stake are invited to become “a point of light” to one of the Young Women in our Stake.  If you choose to participate we would like you to create something special with one of the Young Women in our Stake in mind.  If you crochet you could make them a scarf or a hat. If you sew you could make them a scripture tote or handbag.  If you embroider you might make them a pair of pillowcases.  If you read you might include a book that has meant something to you in your life.  If you love music you might include a CD of your favorite kind of music. Most important we would like you to include a note to a Young Woman in our Stake telling them how special they are and how you have thought of them as you prepared this gift.  In the note please include your name and address.  The Young Women will have an opportunity at Camp to write a thank you note.

We would ask that you wrap your gift and get it to the person who is helping us in your Ward (Christy L.) by July 18th .   Each Young Woman will have the opportunity to come to the kitchen at Camp and do some service by helping prepare or clean up a meal.  As a part of their service they will be given a gift from the Sisters in the East Stake with a note telling them how wonderful they are.  If you have any questions please send an email to lizchidester@cox.net
